This issue of InTransition brings you reporting on issues that are important to everyone—pedestrian safety and making our communities more walkable. Here in northern New Jersey, we’re working to combat the state’s high pedestrian crash rate through our Street Smart NJ public education campaign.

Street Smart NJ encourages motorists and pedestrians to “check your vital signs,” because pedestrian safety is vital to everyone’s wellbeing. The campaign can serve as a model for similar efforts across the nation. Indeed, elected officials and transportation professionals must strive to realize new ways to reduce crashes and improve safety, even as we face growing travel demands. It is a priority that cannot be overlooked.

This issue brings you other stories to inform these efforts—on the movement to eliminate pedestrian fatalities, technology that aims to improve pedestrian safety, features on how greenways and open streets events can improve a community and more. I hope you enjoy the issue and please send us your thoughts and comments.
